The Samsung ML-5017ND ($950 street) is a monochrome laser printer designed for high-volume printing, with a copious 520-sheet standard paper capacity and a maximum duty cycle of 200,000 pages per month. It has adequate if not stellar speed, and solid output quality.
The ML-5017ND is a boxy printer, measuring 14.1 by 16.5 by 17.1 inches (HWD), larger than you?d want to share a desk with, and weighing 56 pounds; you?ll want to use two people to move it into place. A notable feature is a color touch screen, with which you can manage jobs, set up functions, control direct USB printing, go into Eco mode, and more, and which eliminates all but two of the physical control buttons.
The ML-5017ND comes standard with a 520-sheet standard paper capacity and an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. Optional 520-sheet secondary trays are available, as well as finishers. It has a maximum paper capacity of 2,700 sheets. In comparison, the Editors? Choice Lexmark T650n ($699 direct, 4 stars) has a standard paper capacity of 350 sheets, but with options for 2,000-sheet and 500-sheet trays to bring the total paper capacity to 4,000 sheets, with a range of stackers and finishers offered. Adding one 500-sheet optional tray to the T650n boosts its input capacity to 850 sheets, for the same total price as you?d pay for the ML-5017ND. The Lexmark T650n does lack an automatic duplexer, though it's available as a $275 option.
The ML-5017ND offers USB and Ethernet connectivity (including Gigabit Ethernet). I tested it on an Ethernet network with a PC running Windows Vista.
Printing Speed
I timed the ML-5017ND on the latest version of our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 8.3 pages per minute (ppm), in line with its rated speed of 50 pages per minute, which would be approximately what you should get if you were to print text only. (Our test suite combines text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content.) We clocked the Lexmark T650n at an even 10 ppm, and the OKI B710dn ($775.99 direct, 3.5 stars) at 9.1 ppm. (We?ve been seeing cheaper, lower-volume mono lasers testing with speeds as high as the 14-ppm range.)
Output Quality
Text, graphics, and photo quality was all pretty typical of a mono laser. Text was of average quality, good enough for most business uses, except ones like demanding desktop publishing applications using very small fonts.
Many of the graphics showed faint banding, a regular pattern of closely spaced thin lines. Slightly uneven distribution of toner created a mottled appearance in places. Graphics are fine for PowerPoint handouts; whether you?d want to distribute them to colleagues you were seeking to impress depends on how picky you are.
Photos were good enough to print out recognizable images from files or Web pages. Some prints showed mild banding, and there was frequently a loss of detail in light areas. Another issue I saw was dithering, or graininess. All told, output quality was reasonably solid across the board.
The Samsung ML-5017ND showed adequate speed and typical output quality for a mono laser. The touch screen, rare on a mono laser, makes it easy to perform most functions. It?s able to print in high volume, and has good paper capacity and that sweet touch screen (rare on a monochrome printer). The Editors? Choice Lexmark T650n is faster, and has a greater range of paper-handling options, but it can?t match the ML-5017ND?s 520-sheet standard paper capacity.
